About Constance

Constance (Konstanz in German) is situated on Lake Constance (the Bodensee in German). The Rhine river, which starts in the Swiss Alps, passes through Lake Constance and leaves it again, considerably larger, by flowing under a bridge connecting the two parts of the city. North of the river lies the larger part of the city with residential areas, industrial estates, and the University of Konstanz; while south of the river is the old town which houses the administrative centre and shopping facilities in addition to the Hochschule or the University of Applied Sciences. Car ferries provide access across Lake Constance to Meersburg, and the Katamaran provides a shuttle service for pedestrians to Friedrichshafen. To the south, the old town borders onto the Swiss town of Kreuzlingen.

Konstanz was the birthplace of Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, constructor of the famous Zeppelin airships.

We highly recommend using public transport from Zurich airport to Constance (1 direct train every hour). All hotels are in easy walking distance to the Steigenberger. Find your train at: or at

Situated in the south-west of Germany, close to the boarder with Switzerland, Constance is easily accessible by road, rail or air from most of the countries within Europe. The nearest Major airport is Zurich, which is just over an hours drive from Constance. The rail journey from Zurich takes 1 hour 15 minutes and there are 2 trains per hour. The railway station in Constance is within easy walking distance of the hotel. The one way fare, 2nd class, is 27CHF (approx. 27USD or 20EUR)

Airlines using Zurich International Airport include most of the major international carriers plus many of Europe's low cost carriers. Friedrichshafen regional airport is located across Lake Constance and depending upon ferry times, is also about an hour's drive away. Friedrichafen airport is used by a number of Europe's low cost carriers.
